The Battles continue on Season 30 of The Voice as coaches Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Queen Latifah and Riley Green and their teammates get closer to Cut Week, the newest twist of the season. But first, the coaches have to pare down their teams.
For Monday night, Queen Latifah paired up Brandon Diaz and Bryan James to go head-to-head in a duet of on Stevie Wonder’s “As” that will take one of them to Cut Week and send the other one home.
It was a knockout performance.
“Fellas, that was awesome,” Riley said. “It was like a heavyweight boxing match just back and forth up there. And y’all performed so well together, too. I loved it. It looked like y’all were having fun. And Brandon, your voice’s got a punch. There’s a real cut through tone that stands out. Ryan, you’ve got a really warm, soothing tone to yours. Again, y’all are very different but again y’all sounded great together.”

Kelly suggest, “”Y’all should be a duo. That was crazy.” Then she added, “Both of your voices are sexy. I don’t know if I can say that. HR, I’m sorry.”
Adam agreed, adding, “I don’t want to live in a world where you can’t say something’s sexy. That was sexy.”
“That was,” Kelly continued. “You can’t go wrong. Either one of you, I think, would do really well in this competition. I don’t know. I can’t pick. I would feel I was betraying the other vocally. Like that was so good.”
Adam was next, and he began, “I will try to be a little bit more helpful to Queen than Kelly was.”
But Queen pointed out, “You can’t help me.”
Adam said, “I’m going to try my best.”
“No one can help me,” Queen admitted.
But Adam didn’t let that dissuade him. “I think that Brandon, your comprehension of this song and your tone and how it matches the song benefited you the most. And then Bryan, you came in with those big high tones and got so much of the Stevie aspect of it, I just think it depends on the day with either one of you guys. I might say that Brandon won this Battle but I also might be more wondering what what’s out there for you now Bryan.”
“You’re super helpful,” Kelly teased.
“Okay, okay,” Adam agreed. “I think that I would stick with Bryan because I chose you from the beginning. That’s what I would say. I would stick with Bryan.”

When it came time for Queen’s critique, she first stood up and applauded the two men, saying, “God, that was fire.”
Then she said, “It’s not an easy song to sing. I was like, ‘I got to give them something that they can really chew on.’ I mean y’all chewed on it, devoured it, ate it and spit it out, cooked it again. What you just did to that song is unbelievable. The harmonies. Wow! What was that? This is a very, very difficult decision. I was hoping that one of y’all would kind of do something wrong. Did you not get the part where you’re supposed to mess up a little bit? And then you going to look in my eyes then? How dare you? Don’t look at me like that.”
Host Carson Daly interrupted her to say, “Queen, this is looking like one of the toughest decisions of the night. There are some Steals available.”
Then Queen continued, “Listen there’s no way either one of y’all should go home tonight. Can I Steal my own players? Listen, I’m new, I don’t know.”
In truth, there are only two Steals remaining. Queen has one, and no, she can’t Steal from her own team, and the other is Adam’s. Kelly and Riley have both used theirs.
Tune in on Monday night to find out the winner of the Battle.
