“Chicago P.D.” star and Chicago-area native LaRoyce Hawkins has officially ended his time on the hit NBC show after 14 seasons.
Hawkins, who plays the beloved Officer Kevin Atwater, is an original cast member of the show, having starred in it for more than a decade.
On Wednesday night, Hawkins’ character made his exit on the show.
It was only fitting that his final episode came alongside the special return of a longtime cast member who also left the show in recent years.
In his final episode, Atwater faces a life-threatening moment that makes him question everything as he battles his job as a police officer, and as a father.
Ultimately, he decides to take himself out of the danger and into the classroom, teaching at the police academy in Atlanta.
“For the past 14 years, the 21st district has been my home,” he said in the final episode. “But raise a drink because I went ahead and made a new family, and it’s time we find a new home. From the heart, thank you.”
The final episode was directed by Hawkins’ former castmate Jesse Lee Soffer, who left the show in 2022 and has had guest directing roles.
“I can’t believe it’s been 14 seasons man. I had the honor and the pleasure of directing @laroycehawkins in his last episode of PD and it airs tonight. He absolutely kills it! Congrats brother. Love you mucho,” Soffer wrote on Instagram.
Hawkins’ departure was mourned by fans and colleagues across social media.
“Tonight we say farewell to a Chicago Legend. A true icon. He graced our TV screens for fourteen incredible seasons,” co-star Karen Obilom wrote on Instagram. “And grace is the word of the day. Because you, my dear @laroycehawkins, did this with absolute grace. You learned from, taught, loved everyone on that set with a fierce passion. I’ve never seen anything like it. And I want you to give yourself grace as you navigate a new reality. A new chapter. You deserve every beautiful thing that solidifies in front of your eyes. I am so excited for you.”
In his own message to fans on Instagram stories, Hawkins thanked those who have watched him through the years.
“Thank you. Thank you for being there for me,” he said. “Thank you for supporting the show. Thank you for your energy and enthusiasm for Chicago PD. Thank you.”
