Now that we have completed a few long course seasons since the last US Olympic Swimming Trials, it’s time to see how many US swimmers over that span swam at or below the newly announced 2028 US Olympic Trials standards.
The 2028 Olympic Trials qualifying period will begin on December 2 and run through 2027, concluding on May 30, 2028, just over a week before the Olympic Trials begin on June 9-17, 2028. This means any time swum before that period does not qualify them for the 2028 trials.

The 2028 US Olympic Trials is targeting an athlete attendance of about 1000-1100, similar to the 2024 Olympic Trials. However, there is an area of uncertainty with the inclusion of the 50s stroke.
These numbers from the last two years, there have been 890 Women and 955 men that have been under those qualifying times, which comes out to 1,845, more than 700 than the target range.
Keep in mind that those numbers do not factor in athletes that have multiple times under the new Olympic Trials standards, which could take a few hundred off of that initial number.
