One of the last hard-hitting safeties in the modern era of football is hanging up his cleats, as veteran safety Kareem Jackson has retired after a 15-year career in the NFL.
Kareem Jackson signs a one-day contract, retiring as a Denver Bronco
Kareem Jackson was one of my favorite athletes and human beings to cover when he was a member of the Denver Broncos. Today, Jackson announced his retirement and signed a one-day contract to make it official.
Jackson, a 15-year NFL vet, is and was one of the last hard-hitting safeties in the modern era of football. His longevity was special — after being drafted to the Houston Texans in 2010, Jackson excelled with a long and durable career that saw him put together five great seasons in Denver, where he and Justin Simmons, who also retired this summer as a member of the Broncos, were one of the NFL’s most impactful duos at the safety position.

Kareem played in 205 career games and started 193 throughout his career, racking up 958 tackles, 22 interceptions, three sacks, seven forced fumbles, and seven fumble recoveries.
On top of an excellent playing career, Jackson was heavily involved in the community of Denver during his time with the Broncos and gave back to the Denver Boys and Girls Club, holding his annual Shop With A Jock with local youth, and the Kareem Jackson Foundation, which supports families with children battling cancer and honors or assists women fighting or surviving breast cancer.
Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson hosted his annual Shop With A Jock event, serving dinner to over 50 youth from the Denver Boys and Girls Club including a shopping spree with Jackson and Broncos teammates.
His foundation was also his choice for his My Cause, My Cleats.
He’s also been a Mile High Sports cover athlete and has had various stories in other issues of our magazine.
I’ll tell you what one of my personal favorite stories is about Kareem, having covered him on the beat. He was always willing to talk with us whether the team won or lost, but his leadership is something that caught my attention early on, and how he and Justin Simmons mentored the younger safeties in the defensive back room is a tradition that’s still being carried on today by the guys in that room.
Jackson was always willing to share tips and ideas with the younger safeties like JL Skinner and Devon Key, former Broncos safety Caden Sterns, and that influence even made its way over to All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain II.
Congrats to Kareem on an incredible career.
