WARREN — A Beachwood man was arraigned Thursday in Warren Municipal Court on several charges, including aggravated robbery, in a 1 a.m. Thursday incident a McDonald’s restaurant on Parkman Road that also involved the Warren fire station across the street, a store a short distance away and another store in the plaza.
Kevin L. Hawk, 28, of Beachwood, was arraigned on charges of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony; two counts of low-level-felony vandalism; and several misdemeanors, including petty theft, vehicle trespass and theft.
A Warren police report states that officers were called to the McDonald’s restaurant in the Trumbull Plaza on Parkman Road for a suspicious person. Two callers said a man tried to break the window at the Warren Fire Station across the street, then came to the McDonald’s drive-thru and threatened to shoot up the restaurant.
Two officers located Hawk walking in the area of the restaurant with a fire extinguisher. Officers handcuffed Hawk and placed him in the back of a police cruiser. Officers learned that the Ohio Adult Parole Authority had obtained a warrant for Hawk’s arrest. Hawk appeared to be very intoxicated and had blood all over his hands and clothing, the report states.
An officer spoke with employees at the restaurant, who said Hawk walked up to the drive-thru window holding a fire extinguisher. Hawk told the employee to give him $40 or he was going to shoot up the store.
The worker got her co-worker, who told police the man was holding something in his hooded sweatshirt to simulate a gun and said he would shoot the worker if he did not give him $40.
The worker told Hawk to leave, and then he lunged at the drive-thru window with the fire extinguisher. The worker tried to pull on the fire extinguisher, but the man pulled it back out. The worker locked the window. The worker said Hawk then headed toward a car in the parking lot. That is when police arrived.
Police also got a call from a person in the parking lot of a store a short distance up Parkman Road stating that his car had been broken into, and his wallet was stolen. An officer went there and saw the driver’s side door window was broken and there was blood on the window and on the ground next to the car, the report states. Two bricks were next to the car.
The owner of the car said he and others were working inside the store. When they came out, he saw the damage to his car.
A Warren officer found the man’s wallet in Hawk’s sweatshirt pocket and gave it back to the victim. Officers noticed that a store in the plaza also had a broken store window. The store manager was notified.
An officer spoke with firefighters at the Parkman Road fire station. They said Hawk took the fire extinguisher from outside the fire station and then shattered the front north-side man-door window by hitting the fire extinguisher with it. A police officer gave the fire extinguisher back to firefighters.
Assistant Fire Chief Chuck Eggleston said Tuesday that the fire extinguisher that was taken was an old one that was outside on a porch only to hold open a door.
The glass in the main entrance door for the living quarters was shattered with the fire extinguisher, but the glass had wire in it, and the person did not make it inside the fire station, Eggleston said.
The firefighters at the station “woke up, and they were watching him, so they called the police,” Eggleston said. When officers arrived, the man had “gone across the street, creating havoc.”
According to court records, Hawk was due for a preliminary hearing in Warren Municipal Court Tuesday afternoon. He was booked into the county jail Thursday on the Warren arrest.
He had also been booked into the Trumbull County jail Sept. 25 on a charge of felony vandalism through Niles Municipal Court that was filed by Niles Police. Hawk was released from the county jail Sept. 30 on that charge.
The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction website states that Hawk is on parole for an attempted aggravated arson and attempted burglary conviction out of Medina County in cases that were indicted in 2019 and 2020. He was sentenced to four years in prison in September of 2020. His expected parole eligibility date was February of 2024.
He was stated to be on parole through sometime in 2027.
