Collin Gosselin, once known as a little boy on the hit TLC show Jon and Kate Plus 8, is opening up about his childhood in a new memoir that alleges abuse and manipulation at the hands of his mom, Kate Gosselin.
“Simply put, my whole life that I lived was a lie,” the now-22-year-old said in a Good Morning America interview on Monday, the day before his memoir, In The Shadow of 8, hits shelves.
The show, which aired from 2007-2009 and then from 2010-2017 as ‘Kate Plus 8,’ following his parents’ divorce, captured the chaotic life of the family, which consisted of two older children, twins Mady and Cara, born in 2000, and sextuplets, which, along with Collin, included Alexis, Hannah, Aaden, Leah, and Joel, born in 2004.
However, when Collin started to “push back” on filming, tension began brewing between him and his mother, who skyrocketed to celebrity status thanks to the show.
“I was the only one out of my siblings who pushed back against filming, and that whole facade that my mom spent years building,” he said. “I was a danger because I could have so easily dismantled that facade.”
When asked what the truth was behind the cameras, he said, “The truth is that my siblings and I were being overworked. We were being exploited. There [were] just no adults to say, ‘maybe this isn’t okay for children.'”
Following Jon and Kate’s 2009 split, the mom of 8 was awarded full custody. At that time, Collin alleges that his mother isolated him and his siblings from their dad and was also physically abusive, recalling one instance where, according to him, she tied zip ties around his wrists and ankles.

He was later institutionalized around the time of his 12th birthday.
“I was told this is for your own good,” he said in the interview, sharing that “I threatened my mom’s income. I threatened her image, and people will do anything to protect their reputation, especially my mom.”
Collin and his sister Hannah eventually moved in with his dad.
Throughout this time, Kate has denied her son’s accusations, claiming he suffered from mental health disorders. After his book was announced over the summer, she, per E! News, said that his claims were “ridiculous.”
While Collin is moving on from his childhood and currently studying finance in college, he said he “would love to” reconnect with his other siblings, from whom he’s estranged.
