The Alabama gymnastics team hosted its first open practice on Friday for fans to see how they have prepared for the upcoming season.
The team is made of 20 athletes, nine of which are newcomers.
The open practice helped to “test that level of adaptability,” said head coach Ashley Johnston.
“[We are] starting to test how our freshmen step in and learn how to compete when there’s extra eyes and attention on them,” she added.
Heading into the season, the team and coaches decided on three captains to lead throughout preseason and into the competitive season.
One of these girls, junior Ryan Fuller, said that there is a lot of pressure that comes with leading a team at such a high level.
Fuller has been working on “not putting too much pressure on” herself.
She is reminding herself that it is okay to make mistakes and to stay present so she can be prepared whenever the team needs her.
After finishing the 2026 season with a 16-12 overall record, the Crimson Tide has taken that as something to push them during their preseason so that they can get exactly what they want out of this upcoming season.
“They’ve been really driven and determined to take whatever that adversity is, put it into play, and actually prepare relentlessly to just become the best version they can possibly be,” Johnston said.
The team will continue to host events during the preseason such as Ghosts and Goblins on Oct. 22 and their Fashion Show on Nov. 20 to get the team and fans ready for the season to kick off.
The Crimson Tide will kick off its 2027 season against Oregon State at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Oregon, on Jan. 8. The meet can be streamed on ESPN+. Alabama will host Auburn in Coleman Coliseum on Jan. 15 for the first home meet of the season.
