Glee hit the screen a full 17 years ago, but almost two decades later, it remains a phenomenon. The Ryan Murphy-led series followed a group of (initially) high schoolers who came from myriad different social groups within William McKinley High School but all came together over their mutual love of singing. The series was full of covers of various classics as well as the new music of the day, incredibly dramatic storylines and some absolutely hilarious scenes.
It’s therefore understandable that viewers have long wanted to see some sort of reboot or revival, and Murphy recently shocked fans by confirming that he has apparently just completed a script for a Glee reboot. Murphy also shared that he has “been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members.” That only makes it all the more confusing that beloved Kurt Hummel actor Chris Colfer just revealed he has yet to hear anything about the project.
Per Bustle, Colfer said, “I know nothing and have heard absolutely nothing. I wish I did…So I don’t know, but hopefully I’ll have more information and I can actually think about it.” It’s genuinely surprising to hear that Colfer was apparently not among the 10 former cast members that Murphy referenced and said he had spoken to, as Kurt was not just an original Glee member on the show but also among the most popular characters throughout its entire run. It’s difficult to imagine that Glee could ever really be rebooted or revived without him.
In addition to suggesting he would be open to considering it, though, Colfer did explain that it would be challenging, especially because of the loss of other cast members, including Naya Rivera, who sadly passed away in 2020.
“It was a really tough show to do, and it would be really hard to do it now that Naya is gone,” Colfer said. “But I do know that Glee fans would probably come after me with pitchforks and jazz hands if I said no.”
For now, it’s apparently anyone’s guess as to whether Colfer will be involved in the project, should it actually come to fruition, but there’s little doubt that many fans would be outraged if he wasn’t invited to join.
