Jeff Probst Reacts to Bizarre ‘Survivor 51’ Quit: ‘It Caught Me Off Guard’ ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

WARNING! The following contains spoilers for Episode 3 of Survivor 51, “What I’m Smellin’ Is Stinky.”Across the past 50 seasons of Survivor, we’ve seen 18 players choose to leave the game voluntarily. Their choice to withdraw from the hit CBS show has had myriad reasons, from homesickness to struggling with the deprivational elements of starving on a desert island. The most recent episode of Survivor 51 added a 19th player to the list — though it may be one of the strangest quits to date.Contestant Rob Antonson hit the ground running in Fiji. Within the first three days, the airline gate agent had secured two tight allies, as well as the first hidden immunity idol of the season. By Episode 2, however, he was an all-out passenger on an emotional roller coaster, going from post-challenge anger to homesick despondency. And it was in the heat of that moment that he attempted a move never before seen on Survivor. Believing it was a unanimous vote against Eric Macksoud, Rob would save him with either his idol or the Shot in the Dark. The only vote that would wind up counting would be Rob’s…which would be cast for himself. The only thing is, this hasn’t been seen on Survivor for a good reason: It’s against the rules.

The pure irony of the attempted move, however, it that it was all for naught. Rob’s ally Ana Sani was blindsided in a huge 6-4 vote, suddenly leaving him on the outside looking in. And, according to Rob, the pain he was feeling in that moment was not just emotional, but physical as well. The first five minutes of this week’s episode of Survivor 51 centered on Rob in the midst of the Tribal Council fallout. It was here he revealed that he had actually sustained an injury while walking into the ocean a couple of days ago. And, while he had previously kept quiet about it until now, even from the Survivor medical team, the pain had apparently worsened overnight. Rob touted in a confessional that he only got four hours of sleep the first four days of the game. And it turns out that would be the most he’d ever get. When Jeff Probst and Dr. Barry paid a visit to camp to check out Rob’s injury, the good doc informed him there was nothing to indicate that he’d need to be pulled from the game. But, upon mentioning a possible risk of infection from a cut on the bottom of his foot, that’s all Rob needed to hear. He proceeded to inform his tribe that he would be removing himself from the game, worried about a possible permanent injury to his leg.The edit of the episode made it clear that next to nobody on Savu was buying Rob’s story, with several tribe members commenting on the coincidence that this injury only seemed to come up after he was both unsuccessful in voting himself out, as well as left on the wrong side of the vote. Ori Jean-Charles even went so far as to say, “My mom named me Ori, not Stupid.” For what it’s worth, Probst kept a relatively neutral demeanor as all of this went down. But, in his weekly edition of his Field Notes post on Instagram, he goes into more detail about his reaction to Rob’s departure.Related: Survivor 51’s Brady Booker Reveals the Wild Thing He Did With His Severed Thumb

“Rob’s decision to voluntarily leave the game caught me off guard,” the Emmy winner wrote. “He had said in an interview that he stepped on something in the ocean, but never once asked for medical to check him out. That’s unusual as we check in on the players quite frequently.”

He continues, “When we finally had Dr. Barry give him an examination at camp, Dr. Barry couldn’t find anything wrong with Rob. To be clear, that doesn’t mean he wasn’t in pain. It only means we couldn’t find any medical evidence of anything wrong.”The host is sympathetic towards Rob’s physical and emotional fatigue, saying, “Rob looked and sounded emotionally exhausted, which can happen to the strongest of humans.Survivor humbles you very quickly and can get you in a variety of ways. Days four, five and six are often VERY tough for players. This is a threshold point that you have to get past. If you can find a way through the desire to give up, you almost always find that second wind.”For what it’s worth, Probst does note the suspect timing of this series of events. He writes, “Can’t help but also piece this together with the previous Tribal Council where it appeared Rob wanted to vote himself out. Is there a connection? Speculation from Rob’s tribemates was very clear — they believed he engineered a quit.”

While producers offered two ‘Survivor 51’ contestants the opportunity to mutiny to the other tribe, Jeff Probst admits he was ‘shocked’ when Carter Krull defected

Unfortunately for Savu, Rob was not the only tribemate they would lose that day. Each tribe was tasked with sending someone over to the other camp, where they were presented with an opportunity to both find an advantage and possibly mutiny. And the envoy for the purple tribe happened to be Carter Krull, Rob’s closest ally. The trip over to the yellow beach was far from sunny for the livestock farmer. He lost out on the advantage after the Toka tribe rifled through his bag, and he seemingly missed the boat to take him back to camp, making his mutiny decision for him. And Probst admits he and the rest of the production team were stunned by Carter’s decision (or lack thereof).“We didn’t really think a mutiny was likely,” he admits. “We just put it in the game as a bookend to the initial marooning, where they spent time together. It was also there as a reminder that in the Open Era we really do mean anything, including a small little moment from the past, is possible.”The opportunity to mutiny has only been presented a handful of times in Survivor history. And the only time the offer was actually taken up was in Cook Islands where Jonathan Penner and Candice Woodcock Cody memorably defected over to the other tribe, the origin story behind the “Aitu Four,” perhaps the biggest comeback story across 26 years of the show. Now, two decades later, Carter has followed in their footsteps.“When I got the call that Carter had mutinied, I was shocked,” Probst says. “The last time this happened was in 2006. Even back then, I thought this was a once-in-a-series moment. Wrong again.”Luckily for Savu, they won’t need to worry about fighting a 10-7 disadvantage next episode. The preview for next week seems to indicate that we’re undergoing the first tribe swap of the season, switching to three tribes. But one thing is clear through the first few weeks of Survivor 51: The players are keeping us — and production — on our toes.
