In a major step toward balancing public safety with animal welfare, the Red Sea Housing Directorate has officially allocated a LE 23 million contract to launch Hurghada’s first fully integrated shelter for free-roaming street dogs.
Moving beyond temporary fixes, the coastal resort town is rolling out a comprehensive, humane strategy designed to manage its stray population with long-term care, structured medical intervention, and proper safety standards.
A modern approach to animal welfare
The ambitious project forms part of a broader technical and logistical framework supporting Red Sea Governorate authorities. Rather than relying on outdated containment methods, the initiative integrates standardized architectural blueprints built around high safety and hygiene guidelines, ensuring that the animals receive proper care in a secure environment.
Key components of the initiative include:
Mass vaccination campaigns: Systematically administering rabies vaccines across the local stray population to protect both communities and animals.
Specialized fleet transport: Equipping the regional directorate with purpose-built transport vehicles adhering to strict technical specifications, guaranteeing safe, stress-free relocation for street dogs.
Structured medical facilities: Establishing dedicated shelter zones for veterinary checkups, sterilization programs, and ongoing recovery.
By combining engineering precision with veterinary science, Hurghada aims to pioneer a sustainable blueprint for animal management along the Red Sea coast—offering a safer, cleaner environment for residents and tourists while giving local stray animals the care and sanctuary they deserve.
