The Athletics are looking for a new front office leader. According to reporting from Patrick Mooney and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Brewers assistant general manager Matt Kleine is on the list of candidates, though it’s not specified if he has interviewed for the gig. The report mentions that Cardinals assistant general manager Rob Cerfolio has interviewed with the A’s but he is expected that he will stay with his current club. Per the report, he is more likely to be promoted to general manager with the Cards, working under president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom.
Kleine was been with the Brewers for many years, first getting hired to work in the scouting department in 2007. He was promoted to assistant general manager in November of 2023, working under president of baseball operations Matt Arnold.
The Brewers have a reputation for being one of the most savvy teams, putting together winning ball clubs annually despite running low payrolls. They have made the postseason in eight of the past nine seasons and had the best record in the majors in 2026. Kleine has already been connected to the Astros’ front office search and is apparently on the radar of the A’s as well.
Cerfolio worked for the Guardians for almost a decade starting in 2015. In October of 2024, the Cards hired him as assistant general manager. At that time, John Mozeliak was still president of baseball operations in St. Louis but it had already been publicly announced that Bloom would be taking over after the 2025 season. The Cards have been rebuilding since Cerfolio joined the club, finishing just below .500 in each of the past two seasons.
Last month, Bloom said the Cards were “status quo” in terms of the general manager vacancy, per Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat. If he is getting legitimate interest from other clubs, perhaps that will motivate the Cards to bump him from AGM to GM, as the reporting from The Athletic suggests is likely.
The A’s fired GM David Forst in August. AGM Dan Feinstein was given the GM title on an interim basis while the franchise looks for someone to take the job more permanently. James Click, Mike Rizzo, Mike Groopman, Taylor Smith, Billy Owens, Sam Fuld and Jared Banner have been connected to the search. Per Aaron Gleeman of AaronGleeman.com, former Twins POBO Derek Falvey turned down an interview before accepting a job with the Mets last month.
