After much anticipation, the first pitch has been thrown at the Chicago White Sox’ first home playoff game at Rate Field Wednesday.
Speculations ran wild after MLB reporter Scott Merkin reported that a “big name” would be throwing out the first pitch at Game 3 of their series against the Cleveland Guardians.
Merkin said he was given no hints as to who it might be, but social media quickly ran wild, guessing everything from Pope Leo XIV to Barack Obama to Michael Jordan.
So who was it?
Famed Sox fan and “Off Campus” star Belmont Cameli, who notably threw out the first pitch at the Crosstown Classic after turning down the Cubs.
It’s not surprising given Cameli was also spotted supporting another Chicago sports team this week, having attending the Blackhawks home opener Tuesday night.
The Naperville-native and star of the hit show “Off Campus,” also threw out a ceremonial first pitch for the Cubs-Sox series opener at Rate Field after he turned down an opportunity to throw the first pitch on the North Side.
“The Cubs asked me to throw out the first pitch, and I was honored. But my family’s a South Side family, so I said, ‘Cubs. Thank you so much for considering me. But I have to politely pass.’ And then I screenshotted that, and I sent it to the White Sox. And the White Sox said, ‘What’s the best email to reach you guys?'” Cameli told TODAY at the time.
The Chicago White Sox are one win away from their first ALCS appearance since 2005.
The Cleveland Guardians will be seeking to avoid elimination, but the White Sox will look to continue their four-game playoff winning streak as they take the field in an afternoon showdown on the South Side.
