‘Break the Cycle’ Became Staind’s Breakthrough Album

Released in 2001 through Flip Records and Elektra Records, Break the Cycle was Staind’s third studio album and its most successful record. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and spent three consecutive weeks at the top.

The album produced several successful singles, including “It’s Been Awhile,” which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and “Fade,” which reached No. 62. “It’s Been Awhile” was an especially major rock hit, spending 20 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart.

In September 2026, Break the Cycle received a seven-times-platinum certification from the RIAA, representing more than 7 million units in the U.S.

Josh Abraham Produced the 2001 Album

Featuring a blend of post-grunge, alternative metal, and hard rock, Josh Abraham produced Break the Cycle. Staind members wrote the album’s songs, with Aaron Lewis, Mike Mushok, Johnny April, and Jon Wysocki receiving songwriting credits across the record.

The album’s emotional subject matter helped establish Lewis’s confessional vocal and lyrical style. At the same time, the band’s heavy guitar-driven sound connected it to the post-grunge and alternative-metal scene of the era.

Who Is in Staind Now?

Today’s Staind lineup features Lewis on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Mushok on lead guitar, April on bass and backing vocals, and Sal Giancarelli on drums. Giancarelli joined the band in 2011, replacing founding drummer Wysocki.

“It was 1993 when I met Mike at a Christmas party,” Lewis said, per Blabbermouth. “If you told me we would be doing this in 2026, I’d have laughed at you. This has truly been the most amazing ride we could have ever possibly been on, and it’s been the most amazing experience that you could have ever provided us.”

The current tour gives fans another chance to hear Break the Cycle live 25 years after the album helped turn Staind into one of the biggest rock bands of the early 2000s.
