The Chicks Recall Their Answer to an Apology Song, and the Crowd Erupts ...Saudi Arabia

Twenty years after “Taking the Long Way,” The Chicks are telling the stories behind it from the stage, including the one about the very public apology song they refused to write.

Natalie Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer played Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre on Saturday, Oct. 3, and Sunday, Oct. 4, as part of their 20th anniversary tour for the 2006 album. The trio is playing every song from the record on this tour, something they had never done before.

The three women, dressed in black, sat center stage, and performed the album as a full first set before intermission. It opened with “The Long Way Around.”

Between songs, they filled in the history on that song. The album was their first after Maines’ 2003 remark about then-President George W. Bush at a London concert led to radio boycotts and public backlash. Maines told the Chicago crowd that producer Rick Rubin reached out when much of the industry had turned away. She recalled Rubin telling them he wanted to produce them and pair them with songwriters because “I think you have something to say.” She added that he was right.

One of those songwriters was Dan Wilson, who co-wrote “Not Ready to Make Nice.” Maines said Wilson asked whether the group wanted to write an apology song. Her answer was a blunt no, delivered with an expletive, and the moment drew the biggest reaction of the night.

The song they wrote instead went on to win Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The album topped the Billboard 200 and earned five Grammy Awards in all, including Album of the Year.

After intermission, the they moved to the hits. The set list for the second half includes “Goodbye Earl,” “Wide Open Spaces,” “Cowboy Take Me Away,” their cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” and “Sin Wagon” to close.

Maines has had fun with the format, too. At the tour opener in Detroit, she joked before the break that the band would return and play the whole album again, “back to front this time.” They played the favorites instead.

Fans who cannot get to a show have something new to hear. A 20th anniversary edition of the album is out now. It adds three unreleased demos and two rarities, with “Live Wire” and “Thin Line” available digitally for the first time.

The tour continues this month. The original itinerary lists two nights at New York’s Beacon Theatre on Oct. 12 and 13 and two at San Antonio’s Majestic Theatre on Oct. 17 and 18, with the run ending at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles in early November.

Two decades on, the songs are still stirring things up.
