Dancing with the Stars pro Val Chmerkovskiy and his Season 35 partner, Jenna Dewan, are taking advice from the judges in their Week 4 dance. Dewan, a professional dancer in her own right, has had the judges’ eyes on her since the beginning because of her background — which includes dancing on tour for Janet Jackson and starring in every dance-lover’s favorite movie, Step Up. So far in the competition, judges have repeatedly pointed out that she needs to ditch solo-dancer tendencies and take the pressure off herself when she takes to the ballroom floor.
“We’re slowing things down,” Chmerkovskiy told Extra host and fellow DWTS icon Derek Hough in a recent interview, noting that “it’s very coincidental, with feedback that we got as far as just slowing things down, letting things breathe, and letting her just be in the moment and not rush to the excellence of perfecting.”
The partners will be dancing the rumba to Mariah Carey’s “My All.”
“It’s a very beautiful dance, obviously very challenging,” he said. “I think people hear ‘slow’ and they’re like, ‘Oh, that’s easy.’ It’s harder to be slow because that means you have to be more controlled.”
Since their previous dances have consisted of a jive, samba, and tango, the pro said he’s looking forward to the rumba because, “There hasn’t even been an opportunity for her to slow things down and be more gentle, be more soft.”

And while it’s no secret that Chmerkovskiy and Dewan are frontrunners in the competition, he said that it makes the stakes even higher.
“I need to deliver. I got f—ing Seabiscuit,” he said. “I need to get her on that podium.”
“I wanna celebrate that,” he added. “When people say, ‘Oh, you got a ringer.’ I got a ringer because she’s a good human I’m willing to show up for. That is the ringer. The worst is when you have somebody who is not reciprocating the love, your passion, and I have that tenfold.
