Pack your bags, because The Amazing Race is back! Every week, Parade’s Mike Bloom will bring you interviews with the team most recently eliminated from the race.In the second episode of The Amazing Race 39, sisters Katie and Charlotte Schultz touted being underestimated for their grit, a facet of them growing up on a farm. But perhaps being immersed in an agrarian lifestyle made taking the train more foreign to them than some of their fellow teams. Katie and Charlotte had a solid, unproblematic first leg of the race, coming in at a modest fifth place. But their fate quickly changed when they touched down in Madrid. A frustrating needle-in-a-haystack task had Katie seeing red, as she combed through hundreds of tomatoes. But, ultimately, it wound up being egg that was all over their faces. The sisters ended up getting on the wrong train, taking them hours in the complete opposite direction. It was a slip-up that ultimately sealed their fate, as the daughters from a family of twelve took home a twelfth-place finish in the race. Now, out of the race, Zach and Nate talk about their choice to go on foot to start the race, how one wrong turn set up their elimination, and what they learned about each other racing around Vancouver.

And honestly, the first time I watched it, I was like, “This is the coolest show ever! I want to be on The Amazing Race one day.” And Charlotte moved in with me a couple of years ago, and we started watching together. And then, within two months of her moving in, we sent in an audition video, and we were like, “This is it. We’re gonna do it.” Charlotte Schultz: She had a hard time convincing me at first to go on with her though. Because I thought it was going to be like Survivor, and I didn’t realize that they were going to put us up in a hotel and feed us. And so I was like, “I can’t go starve!” So I was a little like worried about it at the beginning. But she talked me into it in just a couple of days.Well, let’s go from the beginning of your race to the end. You saw Dafina and Saran when you got the Detour. How far behind were you from them by the time you checked into the Pit Stop?Charlotte: I think it ended up being over 20 minutes. Obviously, once we got to “A Slice of HIstory,” Dafina and Saran, they tested one more time, and then they were out of there. It definitely looked a lot closer on camera.Katie: We were so pumped when we showed up, and there was still a team there because it had been hours since we had seen anybody. That gave us new life, just to see another team. But they immediately left, and we were like, “Okay, that’s not good.”Let’s get into this whole “Plaza del Sol/Sur” mix-up that ended up sealing your fate. What exactly was the reason why you made such a crucial error?Charlotte: That was really hard to watch back. We made a lot of mistakes. We were just so frantic leaving the tomato challenge. We were so excited to be moving in any direction. And so we just hopped on the metro. We were so excited to be headed to a destination that we just kind of zoned out. And that was a huge mistake that we deeply regret. [Laughs.]Katie: All day, when we rode the metro out to get to the tomato challenge, the last stop on the train was Plaza de Siu. So in our head, that felt really familiar. And so when I read the clue, I was like, “Oh, I know this!” And it just immediately clicked in. And honestly, watching it back, I didn’t remember any of these conversations that we had. I feel like I was blacked out because I was on the adrenaline high of finding that finally after being last, I was so panicked. There was not a thought in the head! [Laughs.]Katie, I want to talk about the Roadblock, which you clearly struggled with. Did you ever debate playing your Express Pass the way Daisha and Dalton did?Katie: Not before they did. Honestly, we showed up to the challenge, and I was like, “Ugh, I’m not a good looker. This is not the challenge for me. But there’s no way that we’re the least lucky team out of 12. There’s no way.” I literally kept telling myself that. Like, “There’s no way it’s not going to be us. We’re not the least lucky.” And as more and more teams left, then Daisha and Dalton played their Express Pass, and then it was down to three of us, down to two of us, I was like, “Well, that would have been a good move!”Charlotte: Our whole mindset through the day was just like, “There’s no way we’re gonna be the least lucky. Even once there was two of us left, I was like, “Okay, as long as we like are close enough together, we can make it up.” But it was really just like the panic and the mindset of being in last place that took over, and that hurt us way more than any time disadvantage leaving the tomatoes.Katie, what was your reaction to the tomato throwers chanting your name in the Roadblock?Katie: Oh, it was like, “Stop trolling me!” Because the more people left, the less people there are to throw at. So there’s more people throwing at you. So like at the end there was like eight people throwing just at me, and then they’re chanting my name, and I’m already frustrated. That was not super fun. [Laughs.] That was tough.Charlotte: The rest of the day, you can see us telling each other, like, “We’re fine, we’re fine, we’ve got this, we’re good, we’re staying calm.” And those are just straight-up lies. We were both panicking, and we were trying so hard to stay calm, but it wasn’t working.Related: Phil Keoghan Breaks Down ‘The Amazing Race 39’ Cast — Including the ‘Most Competitive’ Racer in Years (Exclusive)In this most recent episode, we saw the “boss ladies” alliance form with some of the all-women teams on the race. But you weren’t mentioned at all. Were you aware of this alliance, and were you a part of it?Katie: No. Because Leg 1, I think, when a lot of that started happening, we had left the first Roadblock before all the other girl/girl teams had left. So they were all there hanging out. Whoever wasn’t jumping was kind of all chatting and whatever, and we were already gone. So I think that we passed that in the first episode. And so then, the beginning of the second episode, we just weren’t there at the same time.Charlotte: Yeah, for those two conversations — at the first Roadblock Leg 1 and then the conversation booking our flights on Leg 2 — we just weren’t there for either of those conversations. So I just think that’s why we weren’t in that group.Well, what teams were you looking to work with by the time you had left the race?Charlotte: We loved Daisha and Dalton from the start. They’re close to our age, super energetic and fun. So we thought that’d be a fun pairing. We worked with them on the metro on the way to Baton to do the tomato challenge at the beginning of the day. But then we just got separated and were on our own in the back. The two of you spoke in a confessional in the premiere about how Katie, as the older sister, is more used to being in control. Did you see that dynamic on the race as well?Charlotte: I think you definitely saw that throughout the race. And I told Katie, “I know there’s going to be a scene in there where you say, ‘We’re going to ‘Puerta de Sur,’ and I say, ‘Are you sure it doesn’t say that on the clue?'” And I wish I had stuck up for that more. I realized that we were not going to the right word, and I just went along with it. And so I really kick myself every day for that. That sucks. Katie: But it’s not your fault though. Because I definitely do have the stronger personality, and I have taken the lead on a lot of things like that.Charlotte: I’m so used to trusting her with everything, and we figure it out and we get it done. So that was just yeah, tough luck.As you mentioned on the episode, you’re two out of twelve kids. Katie, did you always want to race with Charlotte, or did you initially have another sibling in mind?Katie: Well so originally, when I first started watching, Charlotte wasn’t over 18, so she wasn’t even an option. So I asked one of my brothers to go on with me and he told me no. And I was like, “Are you crazy?! Who wouldn’t want to do this?!” But looking back, we would not have been good personality matches, so I’m glad it didn’t work out. [Laughs.]What was the rest of your family’s reactions to watching you race around the world together?Charlotte: Oh, they’re loving it! It was so fun to watch the first episode with them. All of our little sisters were cheering every time we came on screen. So, so sweet. And then last night, I mean, they’re all crying with us. It was just a hard watch. So it’s been fun. Finally, what’s the biggest thing you learned about your sister racing around the world together?Katie: I learned what a blessing it is that Charlotte is so calm and just ready to enjoy the moment. I’m such a stressor. I’m such a planner. I want to have everything under control. And I could just appreciate the way that she just enjoyed what she was doing, and she just lived in the moment. And I got to see her on a different side, and a little bit more grown up than a lot of environments that I’ve seen her in as my little sister. So that was so fun. And I definitely will see her more as an equal going forward.Charlotte: That’s a good day for me! [Laughs.] No, the race was such a cool experience, and getting to see her lead. Yes, we did make mistakes in Leg 2. But she has always been the leader in a lot of our sibling relationships in the family. She’s always been so smart and planned everything and took care of us. And that didn’t stop on the race. She planned so much. You always saw her getting directions and planning our route and making sure things happened and got done. And she’s always been so good at that, so good at making sure that she pays attention to all the little things. I know Leg 2 wasn’t a great representation of that, but Leg 1, we crushed it! It was such a good day. We were riding that high for a while, and that’s because she planned everything. She got us to BC Stadium. She got us to the rowing. So I really appreciate how much effort she puts in behind the scenes, just with the navigating, all of the little things.
