More details could be revealed Monday as the Chicago woman charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of a 7-year-girl in the city’s East Chatham neighborhood in broad daylight this weekend will make her first court appearance.
Shavon Gayden, 48, was taken into custody minutes after the stabbing occurred late Saturday morning along South Cottage Grove Avenue near East 86th Street. According to officials, Gayden is expected to appear in court at 12 p.m.
According to police, the young girl was walking down the sidewalk about 11:55 a.m. Saturday along South Cottage Grove Avenue when a woman she did not know approached and stabbed her in the back multiple times. The girl was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Surveillance video obtained by NBC Chicago showed witnesses rushing over to what is believed to be the area where the young girl was attacked.
Several witnesses could also be seen running away from the scene to chase down the suspect. Police said the bystanders detained the woman, and she was later taken into custody after receiving treatment at a local hospital for injuries she sustained while being detained.
The girl was later identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Eddimar Paola Hernández Chacón. Ald. Michelle A. Harris, of the city’s 8th Ward, said Eddimar and her 16-year-old sister were in the area to pay a phone bill at the Boost Mobile store.
The sisters were followed by the woman after leaving the store. Authorities haven’t said what, if anything, prompted the attack.
“The baby is the innocent person in all of this. It’s a tragedy… that a baby could lose her life while walking down these streets,” Harris said as part of a statement.
On Sunday, relatives gathered for a vigil, where they called for justice for their young loved one.
A prayer circle formed as family members and neighbors gathered to mourn, and white balloons were released into the sky in Eddimar’s memory.
