Egypt’s Agriculture Ministry steps up field efforts to prevent rabies ...Egypt

News by : (EGYPT INDEPENDENT) -

The General Organization for Veterinary Services, affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, is intensifying field efforts to prevent rabies and address the problem of stray dogs across Egypt.

These measures aim to ensure a rapid response to reports, thereby safeguarding public health and citizen safety.

The Head of the Organization, Hamed al-Aqnas, noted that veterinary teams—equipped with the necessary gear and resources and working in coordination with the Ministry of Local Development, governorates, and relevant authorities—are actively handling reports and cases requiring intervention.

He explained that the field response plan begins with the safe capture of the dogs, followed by veterinary examination and assessment.

Based on this assessment, appropriate measures are taken—including rabies vaccination, sterilization, and release—for cases where the evaluation deems such action permissible under established regulations.

Aqnas added that aggressive animals—determined through veterinary assessment to pose a direct threat to the lives and safety of citizens—are handled in accordance with governing regulations, procedures, and animal welfare principles.

The authority’s head emphasized that protecting the lives of citizens is a top priority.

He added that response teams address reports and intervene in areas requiring action based on the specific nature and field assessment of each case.

Aqnas pointed out that, alongside field operations, 12 animal shelters have been established across several governorates, including Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Port Said, Suez, Ismailia, Daqahliya, Beni Suef, and Damietta.

He further said that 14 vehicles have been equipped to support field operations—including two based at the Authority’s headquarters—in addition to vehicles stationed in the various governorates.

Vaccination efforts underway

Aqnas added that 200,000 doses of rabies vaccine have been provided free of charge to support vaccination efforts across the country.

Furthermore, work teams have been supplied with the necessary equipment and materials for the safe capture and handling of dogs, with additional equipment and nets currently being procured to enhance the teams’ mobility and responsiveness to reports, he said.

Aqnas noted that the state’s efforts in this area rely on an integrated approach—extending beyond vaccination alone—that encompasses responding to reports, capture and veterinary assessment, vaccination and sterilization, sheltering, and managing cases that pose an immediate threat.

These measures also include raising awareness and preventing rabies, through coordination among the Authority, veterinary medicine directorates, the Ministry of Local Development, governorates, and other relevant entities, he said.
