Two suspects are in police custody after a man visiting from upstate New York with his wife was shot during an attempted robbery while in a Streeterville parking garage Friday evening.
The attack happened about 6:30 p.m. in the 400 block of East Illinois Street as the man, 64, and his wife, 29, of Plattsburgh, were retrieving something from their rental car in a lower level of a garage, according to a police report obtained by the Sun-Times.
Witnesses told police two masked robbers confronted the couple, and one demanded the man give him his keys while brandishing a black gun in their direction, according to the report.
When the man refused, the gunman reportedly said, “Give me your keys, or I’m going to shoot you,” before he opened fire, hitting the man in the left side of his rib cage, according to the report.
Police and paramedics responding to the scene slowed the man’s bleeding after he was found lying on the ground. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the report.
Meanwhile, the two attackers fled the parking garage through the Grand Avenue exit and headed west, the report said.
Charges have not been announced for the suspects, one of whom is 16 and the other 22, who were in police custody, according to the report.
