Bob Barker is celebrated not only for his legendary status as the host of The Price Is Right but also as an animal rights activist after making a $5 million donation to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
Since his retirement from hosting the longtime CBS show in 2007, the Television Academy Hall of Fame inductee has largely lived out of the spotlight while focusing on philanthropic activities, including supporting animal rights.

The retired host believed that Japan was using “scientific research” as a justification to hunt more than 1,000 whales during the winter, which critics viewed as a form of commercial whaling in practice.
“We must make people aware and that’s what I try to do,” he said, as cited by ABC7 News, adding, “They sell these whales. They sell the meat. Principally, it’s on the supermarket shelves. I have thoroughly enjoyed earning what money I have, and I’m thoroughly enjoying giving it away.”
The statement referenced Barker’s effort to help end whaling, including his decision to write a $5 million check to fully fund Sea Shepherd’s purchase of an anti-whaling vessel.
That same year, marine conservation activist Paul Watson, who founded the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, named the vessel MY Bob Barker in honor of The Price Is Right host.
Following the multi-million donation, Barker spoke about how proud he was that his namesake ship was able to save lives.
“By virtue of the Bob Barker being there, six lives were saved,” he told the Los Angeles Times, adding, “The whole purpose is to sink the Japanese whaling fleet economically by making it impossible for them to harvest enough whales to continue to exist.”
The vessel, named the Bob Barker, also took on a significant role in the conservation group’s fleet after joining the organization in 2009.
The original Bob Barker served Sea Shepherd for 13 years before the organization retired the vessel in 2022 and later decommissioned it in 2023.
A new M/V Bob Barker was launched in 2024, continuing the legacy of the iconic host.
