Coetze stopped the clock at a mighty 49.11 to register a new African continental record, overtaking his own former standard of 49.35 notched in 2024.
Coetze was trailing Russia’s Pavel Samusenko into the final turn, where the race came down to the finish.
Coetze split 11.30/12.19/12.95/12.67 to Samusenko’s 11.27/12.18/12.98/12.81, with the Russian settling for silver in 49.24.
America’s Shaine Casas rounded out the podium in 49.89.
Both Samusenko and Casas have cleared the 49-second barrier in their careers, with the former owning a PB of 48.78 from last year and the latter having been as fast as 48.84 in 2022.
