The Ruko R1 Mini combines remote and gesture controls with fun tricks, interactive modes, and a kid-friendly design at an affordable price.
The Ruko R1 Mini Robot Dog is a compact, budget-friendly interactive toy for those tech-savvy kids who want more than just an RC car. It positions itself as an affordable electronic pet that combines remote control, gesture sensing, and a handful of stunts and interactive modes at the press of a button.
Ruko has built a name for itself with affordable drones and fun tech-focused toys at budget-friendly prices! So it really came as no surprise that they decided to make something else that any kid would enjoy playing with. With budget-friendly pricing and an emphasis on ease of use, it makes for a great gift for most ages!
Design and Build.
The R1 is noticeably smaller and more toy-like than some of Ruko’s larger robot dogs, such as the 18011 model. Its compact footprint makes it easy for younger kids to handle and even take with them places. The plastic body feels typical for the price point; it is durable enough for indoor play and can even handle the outdoors. It includes a remote control and supports gesture control by using a wrist-strap controller with a finger-strap pointer, which is one of its more interactive features for kids.
Features and Performance.
The Ruko R1 can perform all kinds of kid-friendly actions, including flips, rolls, push-ups, swimming motions, shaking hands, and a “potty” move with matching sounds (haha), plus a handful of preset action moves. It also offers interactive modes like Kung Fu, Dance, and a Story mode with a few preset kids’ songs. Playtime is listed on their website at up to about 50 minutes on a single charge.
Gesture sensing and the remote control tend to be the most fun elements for the kids, while the programming features and haptic touch on the body are more than enough to entertain a younger child.
Personal experience.
We get more than one opinion on this one! Not only did I personally test this out myself, as usual, but I went out and got a professional to take a look at it with me and by professional, I mean my 7-year-old son. Haha.
We live in a house that is always advancing with us, from tech being implemented into our daily lives, from our vehicles to our home life. It’s not uncommon for the kids to have their fair share of it as well. As fun as Legos are, who doesn’t love a new piece of technology, especially when it’s a dog! So let’s see what you can get your hands on for under $50 and whether you can be the coolest gift giver at the birthday party!
When we first opened the box, we were greeted by a nice, clear molded plastic shield that holds everything firmly in place and keeps your new product safe and sound. No loose packing that just makes a mess or never really truly protects. My son was able to open it and take it out of the box with ease, and that doesn’t sound like something worth noting, but some of these toys out there seem to require an engineering background to open up. Haha. The dog itself has a rechargeable battery that uses a built-in USB-C cable for charging; the wrist gesture controller comes with a watch-style battery, while the main controller requires batteries to use that are, of course, not included!
When it came to using the R1 Mini, the controller was very easy to use and fit both mine and my son’s hands, easily used by all ages. One of my favorite things about it has to be the option to turn the volume down, and I’m sure I’m not the only parent that will appreciate it either. The gesture controller is kind of what you’d expect from a small kids’ toy. Made of plastic and a one-size-fits-all wrist strap that did fit on my son but was very large, and I don’t think it would fit a wrist any smaller. The R1 Mini robot dog also has a touch area that makes the dog do a little dance; I found this to be more of a hit with the younger kids. My nephew sat there for an hour touching its back and watching it move around; occasionally we would press a preset button on the remote to engage a new movement to keep him interested.
So far the robot dog has been brought to the park, a campfire, show and tell for class, and I’m sure there are more places it’ll go. They are certainly going to put it through the paces. The kids have really enjoyed this one thus far, and I can certainly see them asking for a bigger version next time. Haha.
Price.
You can currently go to Roku directly and find the R1 Mini robot dog for a listed price of $59.99 or you can hop on over to Amazon and find it for the same low price of $59.99.
Conclusion.
The Ruko R1 Mini Robot Dog is a solid budget option if you’re looking for an inexpensive interactive toy that can walk, flip, respond to gestures, and keep a child entertained for a while. I mean, it worked for my kids. Haha. It delivers the core fun of a robot pet without a high price tag or delicate moving pieces. My biggest advice if considering purchasing is to just go in with realistic expectations; it’s a capable toy in its price range, not a high-end robotic pet.
If your child mainly wants something cute that moves and does tricks, the R1 is worth considering, or maybe you want to be the cool aunt or uncle to bring a fun tech toy that looks and acts more expensive than it is. If you want more expressive features, longer programming sequences, or something better suited to older kids, Ruko’s higher-tier models may be worth a look. Overall we had a great time with it, and I look forward to testing out more fun toys like this with the experts I call my children!
