ALBANY, N.Y. — Gov. Kathy Hochul appointed a special prosecutor in Cornell University’s alleged gang rape case.
New York Attorney General Letitia James will now lead the investigation after Hochul signed an executive order. Hochul made the move after losing faith in the Tompkins County district attorney and Cornell police department to properly prosecute the case.
News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with Monroe County Legislator and Cornell alum Rachel Barnhart about the case and a sexual assault resource center to see what help students can find locally.
“Even when I went to Cornell 25, 30 years ago, there were debates about Greek life. There were discussions about sexual violence and protecting women. These stories have not gone away after decades,” Barnhart said.
Meredith Ouderkirk, director of public affairs for Planned Parenthood of Central & Western New York, said Rochester is an area with a lot of resources for survivors.
“We serve as the rape crisis center, and program for Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties,” Ouderkirk said.
“Look, this is not a problem that is unique to Cornell, but I would understand if anyone had reservations, which is why Cornell needs to step back and allow an independent review of what happens here and be very transparent about what is going to happen going forward,” Barnhart said.
One of the men named in the lawsuit is Scott Norris from Canandaigua. NBC News recently reported on Jane Doe’s initial 2024 statement to the police.
