In our Money Secrets series, we ask people to confess their furtive money-related secrets which they are hiding from loved ones or that people do not know the full extent about.
Today, we speak to Lorna, whose name we have changed to protect her identity. She reveals how she has a secret side hustle as a ‘cam girl’.
When I first moved to London for university at the age of 18, trying to have a good time as a young person who had left home for the first time, I realised how expensive the city is.
So, for a short period of time, I was having phone sex for money. It was just sex talk to guys over the phone, but I could make £50 in an hour. At that time, in 2008, that felt like a lot of money. Even now, £50 for one hour is pretty decent.
However, I only did this for a short stint and ended up having a career in the media. Things were great until the pandemic and I got laid off.
I was 30 that year and had some redundancy money. I had a blast that summer as things were opening up and people were allowed to do things again. However, I soon started thinking about what I was going to do next as money was going out, but nothing was coming in.
When you are used to having money consistently hit your account every month, it is a scary feeling.
I wanted to take control so I became a cam girl. I was inspired by a girl who did my eyebrows who told me she did it and was earning good money.
Initially, I had thought I would do phone sex again as I knew it was easy money. However, I found that things had changed a lot between 2008 and 2020 and it was only going to pay me around 3p a minute, which is hardly anything.
Everything had moved online and people wanted live video. So I started working as a cam girl in August 2020. Essentially, you are livestreaming to an audience of men in a chatroom style environment. You can set your own rates and get paid by the minute.
I found it so thrilling because you feel that you have control and agency. It is very fast, easy money and requires no skill. Sometimes, just flirting with a guy is enough and you don’t even have to fully take off all of your clothes. But for the most part, they want to see you naked and for you to see them naked.
When I first started doing it in August 2020, it was just before OnlyFans blew up. I am not on OnlyFans, which I believe is maybe getting saturated. On Onlyfans, you have to do your own marketing and drive people to your profile to make money.
However, the platform I am on is already an extremely high traffic website so I am not having to do the hard work. The platform takes 30 per cent, but I don’t have to spend time marketing.
Becoming a cam girl solved a lot of my money worries during that period. I now do freelance PR for fashion and beauty brands.
However, I have kept up the cam job on and off throughout the years. As a freelancer, sometimes things are good, while other times, things can be a bit slow and sometimes, people take ages paying invoices.
I get paid a day rate for my PR fashion and beauty job and can be paid anything between £150 to £250 a day. However, as a cam girl, I earn a lot more than that if you look at it as an hourly rate.
It depends how much time I put in, but on an average day, if I livestream for two hours, I can take home anything between £70 to £150. That doesn’t mean I am working and doing shows for the entire time – it just means I am appearing live for two hours. I could make a lot more money, but I would get bored.
The platform I am on is global and I have a lot of regulars from all different time zones. There are always new people too. If I did a retail or hospitality job, I would earn around £14 an hour and would not consider that worth my while when I can work from home and not use my brain.
I have been doing it on and off for the last six years and estimate I have earned tens of thousands of pounds.
It has definitely overtaken my day job in terms of earnings versus time as I am only doing it for a fraction of the time. I can make as much from being a cam girl for two hours than I do for a full day of work in my PR job.
However, it does not take much to validate these men online and while I am grateful to them, it doesn’t meet my needs as an intellectual. That is why I am still continuing my day job and pursuing hobbies and interests.
My quality of life has only been made possible because of my side hustle. It has given me financial freedom as well as time to explore work opportunities and hobbies that would perhaps have been out of the realm of possibility.
I live by myself with my dog and have a nice home. I go for meals out with my friends, go to a good gym and enjoy holidays.
I keep my side hustle a secret because while I think most people would be accepting and understanding, I personally don’t want to deal with the fallout of people who try to reconcile who I am professionally versus my work as a cam girl.
