Michael Learned is arguably best known for her portrayal of John Boy’s (Richard Thomas) mother, Olivia Walton, in the beloved ’70s drama, The Waltons.
MeTV.com reported that Learned stopped starring in the series following season 7, which premiered in 1978. According to the publication, Learned shared that while she knew leaving The Waltons was for the best, her exit felt surprisingly “emotional.”

Learned, who had previously been a stage actress, explained she was frustrated by her character’s lack of storyline. She explained that while the show’s creator, Earl Hamner Jr., would “want [her] in the shot,” they wouldn’t give her much to do.
“They’d have me ironing and going, ‘And then what happened, kids?’ ‘And then where did you go?’ ‘John Boy, more coffee?’ And things, just to have me in the scene. But as an actor, it was just boring,” said Learned, who briefly appeared in the show’s 8th season.
The actress, now 87, clarified that she had a close bond with the show’s cast and crew.
MeTV.com reported that Learned said she wasn’t too thrilled to be acting in The Waltons even at the start of the show.
“Funny thing — in the early stages of The Waltons, I wanted out. I had difficulty making the adjustment from the American Conservatory Theatre. Financially, the series was the best thing that ever happened to me. Professionally, too,” explained Learned during a The Morning News interview, per MeTV.com.
According to MeTV.com, Learned clarified she did come to enjoy her time on The Waltons, especially because of the warm reaction from viewers.
“I think there’s a hunger in this country for that type of family. People are longing for the security where you knew your neighbors, where you didn’t have to lock your doors, and where someone’s word was good enough,” said Learned while speaking to The Morning News. “People still come up to me and say ‘I grew up watching you. I loved you and I still do.’ I felt privileged that people loved the show.”
