Wells made similar comments about her Gilligan’s Island character in a 2008 interview with the Television Academy Foundation. According to the actress, she helped establish Mary Ann’s sweet but strong character.
“My Mary Ann was very strong, my Mary Ann wanted you to help with the work and she was sort of the young women’s libber of the ’60s, so to speak. She pitched in and did everything and was practical. And my interpretation of the character gave Mary Ann that strength,” said the What Would Mary Ann Do?: A Guide to Life author during the 2008 interview.
