VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) – Derek Hansen Skinner of Santa Paula has been charged in connection with an August DUI crash that injured his passenger and a California Highway Patrol officer.
According to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, Skinner is facing charges of driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage causing injury and driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent or higher and causing injury.
The 34-year-old Santa Paula man was arraigned on his charges on Sep. 29 of this year and pled not guilty to all charged counts shared the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.
On Aug. 15, around 11 p.m., Skinner was driving northbound on Grimes Canyon Road with a passenger when he allegedly crossed into southbound lanes as he approached a curve in the roadway detailed the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.
Skinner collided with a southbound California Highway Patrol vehicle and the crash resulted in a shin abrasion for Skinner, a head laceration and broken wrist for the officer, and the passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle before they were transported with major injuries to a local hospital noted local prosecutors.
According to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, Skinner had "the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage", performed "poorly" on a field sobriety test and had a blood alcohol content almost twice the legal limit at the time of his arrest.
Skinner is next due in court for a pre-trial hearing on Nov. 3, 2026, and he remains in custody with bail set at $50,000 stated the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.
