The long-awaited reunion happened during a 90-minute “UnLedded” MTV project that was recorded in Morocco, Wales, and London. While many fans waited a long time for the reunion, they were stumped to learn that only two of its original memebers were returning.
“No Quarter” was considered a signature track for Jones, and was dismayed to learn his former bandmates named the album after a track predominantly attributed to him. In fact, Jones had no idea about the project until learning about it from the media at the same time everyone else did.
“I just thought I should have been informed about it,” he told Rolling Stone. “To find out about it in the papers was a bit odd.”
A year later during the band’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Jones even commented, “Thank you, my friends, for finally remembering my phone number.” According to Plant, his relationship with Jones took a hit due to misinterpreted words at a press conference for the MTV event. He was asked where Jones was, with the singer replying “He’s parking the car.”
“I apologized, and I went to one meeting and got on one knee as he was walking out – to tie my shoelace, as well – and said, ‘John, surely now we’re way too old for this?’ But he just sidestepped me and walked out into the East London air,'” he said.
Years later, the members would reunite on stage, and “No Quarter” got a new life in 1996. The rock band Tool developed a 12-minute verision and denied it being used for Howard Stern‘s Private Parts film. They instead released it on their 2000 box set.
