WARREN — Trumbull County commissioners are considering establishing an annual program allowing the sheriff’s office to purchase at least four patrol cars per year to replenish its aging vehicle force.
Under the proposed program, the county will be able to purchase a minimum of four vehicles per year or one vehicle per quarter.
Sheriff Michael Wilson cited a critical need to obtain new vehicles because some in the fleet have more than 200,000 miles on them.
“We have 12 vehicles with more than 150,000 miles, 10 with more than 200,000, with five of those getting close to having 300,000 miles,” Wilson said. “We have eight being taken off the road because they are unsafe. That is out of a fleet of 65 patrol cars we have.”
Wilson noted the county has to find ways to get replacement vehicles faster.
He noted new interceptor vehicles now cost between $60,000 to $65,000, before any necessary equipment, i.e., radios, lights, cages, weapon holders and other items are added.
Commissioner Rick Hernandez noted that creating a system in which vehicles are replaced has been done on a smaller scale in other communities, such as Hubbard.
“I believe if we do one car per quarter, the sheriff will have an influx of cars coming, and the older units we can begin pushing out,” Hernandez said.
Shara Taylor, the financial/purchasing administrator in the commissioners’ office, noted the proposal is designed to not require the county to purchase new vehicles if funds are not available.
Taylor said purchasing one car per quarter is not that significant.
“It is when you’re purchasing five at one time that it becomes significant,” she noted.
Commissioner Tony Bernard supports having a plan.
“We would like to, at least, replace one a quarter,” he said. “If we can do more, I think we should.”
Commissioner Denny Malloy noted that during his four-year term, the county provided the sheriff’s department more than 20 vehicles.
“We are hitting that four a year,” he said. “Closer to five a year.”
“We started with the $900,000 in ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funds,” Malloy said.
The county has in recent months purchased some used vehicles from other departments to lower its costs.
The commissioners also are expected to vote today on spending $30,634.62 on four used vehicles purchased from the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office.
