MGM+ has greenlit an eight-episode adaptation of Sandford’s popular Rules of Prey, the first book in the Lucas Davenport series. Ackles will take on the lead role, who is a former Minneapolis PD detective pulled out of seclusion when there is a series of murders designed specifically for him to solve.
Davenport needs to decipher the twisty clues that the brilliant serial killer leaves behind. It’s a dark and gritty cat and mouse game that is surely perfect for fans of Cross and Reacher.

It’s the latest adaptation of a crime novel coming to streaming services. On top of that, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan showed how it was possible to remain loyal while also bringing a modern-day take to a story.
Since the success of Reacher, the Neagley spinoff has dropped on Prime Video to rave reviews. In 2025, the Ballard spinoff from the Bosch series also impressed, cementing streaming as the place to turn for this genre. MGM+ was originally called Epix, but changed its name after Amazon acquired MGM Studios.
Ackles is a busy man. Not only will he return to Tracker Season 4 during the fifth episode, he will also headline The Boys spinoff Vought Rising, which wrapped filming in March 2026. Eyes have been on his next big project after Countdown was canceled after just one season, and Rules of Prey is it.
Rules of Prey is just the first in the iconic crime thriller series. Published in 1989, the series now consists of 36 main books, with the most recent, Revenge Prey, published in 2026, offering the creative team plenty to work with for fans of the original novels.
