Hurricane Polo is growing in intensity off the coast of southwestern Mexico, with officials detailing that its dangerous winds and tropical storm could be life-threatening.
As of Today, the National Hurricane Center reported that Hurricane Polo has intensified into a powerful Category 5 storm. They warn that the hurricane is “extremely dangerous” and poses a threat to parts of the states of Guerrero and Michoacán due to elevated flooding.

Mexican authorities have issued warnings and precautionary measures for areas along the Pacific coast, from Tecpan de Galeana, in Guerrero, to Punta San Telmo, in Michoacán. Main guidance is coming from the Coordinación Nacional de Protección Civil (CNPC) and the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN).
The CNPC advised those living in the at-risk area to evacuate immediately is an authorization issue and an evacuation order. With warnings of heavy rainfall, strong winds, flooding, and rising water levels, authorities recommended that locals know the locations of nearby shelters. Schools in parts of Guerrero and Michoacán were also suspened as a precautionary measure.
Current forecasts indicate that Hurricane Polo is not expected to make landfall near the U.S. However, the storm rapidly intensified to Category 5 strength less than 24 hours after becoming a hurricane. Some forecasts also indicate that Polo could contribute to increased monsoonal thunderstorm activity over parts of New Mexico.
Forecasters are expecting Hurricane Polo to continue its current path before turning northwest by Tuesday night into Wednesday, with the core of the hurricane near the southwestern Mexican coast.
