Night two of the three-part Season 30 premiere of The Voice continued with coaches Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Queen Latifah, and Riley Green back in the red swivel chairs battling it out for the best singers to fill their teams.
The show opened with 15-year-old Koumba Diallo, the freshman class president at her high school in Delano, CA.
“I’ve been watching The Voice ever since I was a little girl,” she said. “I sing for my school’s choir, and I hope the coaches see that I am so willing to work for something that I have dreamt of my entire life.”

Koumba chose Demi Lovato’s “Stone Cold” for her Blind Audition. Queen turned first, then Kelly, then Riley and finally Adam at the very end, but he was the first to speak.
“When I was 15, it’s such a joke where I was at developmentally as a human being,” Adam said.
Riley interrupted to say, “The ‘60s were tough.”
Adam responded, “Oh, I get it because I’m old. Is that it?” Then Adam continued with Koumba, saying, “You’re just amazing. Honestly, if this is you at 15, what is it going to be at 16? I can’t even imagine. You’re in a great place. You probably can’t go wrong. I’m probably the best coach, but you can choose whoever you want, and the world is yours.”
Then it was time for the Queen. She said, “Well done! I loved the lower registers. You starting down there and just murdering it down in those notes, I was like, ‘Wait a minute, I have to turn around.’ It was beautiful, and I love Demi Lovato, so you picked a great song to flex a bit. Where does this love of music come from for you?”
Koumba said, “I’ve been singing since I was about 9 years old. I started at a pageant. My mom wanted me to dance or play the piano because I had never sung in my life before and I was, ‘No,’ and I put my foot down. ‘I want to sing.’ And she was like, ‘Girl, you’ve never sung before. You can’t sing.’ And I was, ‘I’ll show you.’ I won in the category Talent and I also placed Queen in the pageant.”
To which Queen said, “It sounds like at 15, you had to prove something to your mother, you had some place to go, and you wanted to be a queen. Well, at 15, that’s what I was doing. I would be happy to have you on Team Queen.”

Next to try to woo Koumba to his team was Riley, who seems the least likely of the coaches, but he didn’t let that stop him.
“It was the most perfect performance I’ve seen here, the most powerful, too,” he said. “Everybody enjoyed that. I’m so happy for your career because you’re going to have one. I promise you. And I know what it’s like to be young, youthful…”
That was too much for Adam, who broke in, saying, “Who wants wisdom and experience? Boring!”
Riley continued, “You’re going to send Adam an email and he’s not going to have a computer.”
Adam chimed in, “Leave me a message on my answering machine.”
Riley went on, “I tried to call his beeper earlier.” Then realized that Koumba might be too young to even know what a beeper is.
Finally, it was Kelly’s turn to pitch. She said, “I want to give it to your mom because you need someone who’s going to keep it real for you. She didn’t all of a sudden give you flowers off the bat. You had to earn that. That’s a great parent. This industry can eat you up. It can make you feel self-doubt. Make sure you’re surrounded by people like that. I always tell young artists – because I’ve worked with a lot of young artists on this show before – I’ve actually won with a couple. With that song, and the reason I didn’t turn around first, is I knew where it was going and I wanted to know if you had it. I’m a little like your mama. I’ll make you work for it.”
Then Adam was struck with an idea, and as the last to turn and at almost the last minute, he pointed out, “I am the most like your mama. I made you work for it all the way until the end.”
Then Riley was back with the old jokes, saying, “Actually, Adam is more like your grandad.”
To which Adam responded, “Grandpa won The Voice last season.”
Then it was back to Kelly, who pointed out, “I was on a show with incredible singers. I think part of why I won was song selection and timing of when I showed people what I could do, and I think that’s the only thing you’re going to have to focus on. You showed us your range. It’s going to be what you release to the public here and there to get you to that finale moment. This show was created for voices like yours. Congratulations. I want to be your coach.”
Then it was time for the big decision. Koumba said, “I’ve thought about this all my life. I chose Team Kelly.”
“Oh, my God!” Kelly exclaimed. “I did not know you were going to do that. Koumba is so good. I thought it was going to be at least a 25-year-old woman. Let’s get you to the finale. Let’s do it.”
The Voice airs the last of the three premiere episodes on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streams next day on Peacock.
