WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Transportation says it will be using a new artificial intelligence tool aimed at helping air traffic controllers manage congestion and reduce flight delays.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says upgrades are needed to prevent future outages.
Duffy told NBC News Washington that the technology will assist human controllers, not replace them.
“I want to be really clear. There’s been a lot of conversation about AI and who’s controlling the airspace. This is a predictive tool that will give a prompt to a human, to someone who’s managing the airspace. But it’s always going to be a human that manages the airspace in America,” Duffy said.
The new AI tool called “SMART” gives controllers more real-time data on weather, flight paths, schedules and even diversions. It stands for Strategic Management of Airspace Routes and Trajectories.
For now, the system will be phased in at Reagan National Airport, Dulles International Airport and BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport.
