MONROE COUNTY, N.Y. — Monroe County awarded more than $100,000 in grants to local towns and villages for climate action projects. Nine towns are getting up to $10,000 each.
In Penfield, the money will be used to install an electric car charging station in the parking lot of the Clark House.In the Town of Perinton, they’re planning to use the cash at the Garnsey Arboretum, where they will mow a whole lot less and add some walking trails. And in the Town of Chili, they’re using the cash to replace leaf blowers, chainsaws, and weed whackers with electric models.
Other towns are using the grants to replace old windows, connect biking trails, and build or upgrade climate resilient infrastructure.
The county made $200,000 available through the general fund for the grant program, requiring a match from local governments. “The project had to demonstrate that it would lower greenhouse gas emissions,” Monroe County Executive Adam Bello explains. Perinton Town Supervisor Jenn Townsend explained how reducing mowing helps the environment, “the purpose of this is to build on the natural tranquility and the enjoyment of this area while reducing the mowing and associated emissions that go along with the mowing.”“One project on its own doesn’t always make a huge difference but 9 projects at a time together, makes a difference, you add that to what Monroe County is doing, it makes a difference,” Bello says.
