UA Counseling Center hosts Suicide Awareness Week ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

This week the UA Counseling Center in collaboration with Tide Against Suicide will host Suicide Awareness Week to raise awareness and understanding of how students can help fight to put an end to suicide on campus and in the community.

Tide Against Suicide is a student organization and the University’s comprehensive approach to prevent suicide on campus that offers tools and training to give support to those affected by suicide.

“Suicide can be a difficult topic to talk about, but we know that suicide prevention and support start with bringing it out into the open,” said Greg Vander Wal, Executive Director of the Counseling Center and Collegiate Recovery.

Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the US and the second leading cause of death in college students. The University of Alabama acknowledges this and wants to educate students on the signs of struggle and resources that can help those who are struggling.

Throughout the week, there will be numerous events and activities for students to enjoy, including QPR training, therapy dogs, percentage days and more.

The main event is the Suicide Awareness walk that will take place on Sunday. The walk will begin at the Student Center Plaza at 6 p.m. and there will be free food and desserts for students.

Vander Wal said the walk “is an opportunity to raise awareness and honor those who we have lost to suicide.”
