Her time of 29.50 just missed her own Asian Record of 29.44 set in March of this year. She’s the top qualifier to finals by .85 seconds ahead of Japan’s Satomi Suzuki (30.35) and countrymate Yang Chang (30.56).
Tang, 22, is the defending Asian Games Champion in the 50 breaststroke. In 2022, she won in a time of 29.96 after setting an Asian Record in prelims at 29.92.
Tang already won the 50 breaststroke at the Pan Pac Championships earlier this summer, and added a silver medal in the 100 breaststroke and bronze in the women’s 400 medley relay.
At last year’s World Championships, she finished 2nd in 30.03 – a rare occasion where she didn’t swim her best at her target meet for the year.
While she has progressed a lot in recent years in short course, she didn’t go sub-30 seconds in 2024 or 2025 in the 50 breaststroke. She has now done so at least six times in 2026.
Finals will be held on Sunday evening in Tokyo.
