A young boy died on Thursday, nearly a week after he was struck by a driver while riding an e-scooter in a southwest suburb of Chicago.
Jad Debiy, an 8-year-old boy from Bridgeview, was critically injured while riding an electric scooter around 5 p.m. on Sept. 11 when he was struck by the driver of a car near the intersection of 92nd Place and the Harlem Avenue frontage road, police said.
He was taken to a local hospital after the crash, where he died six days later, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.
Debiy is one of several people who have been killed while riding e-scooters in the Chicago area this year, including a number of teenagers.
On Aug. 3, 16-year-old Alex Blacio was killed when he was struck while riding an e-scooter by a semi-truck driver on busy Western Avenue in North Center. He was on his way home from work when he was hit. Earlier this spring, Astrid Alexandra Carrillo Noguera, 17, and Violet Harris, 15, were both killed while riding e-scooters on the South Side nearly a month apart.
At least six people have also been killed this year by drivers while riding electric and non-electric bikes in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, including earlier this week when 54-year-old Juan Martin Marquez Luna died a day after he was struck while riding an e-bike in a two-vehicle hit-and-run crash in Chicago’s Garfield Ridge neighborhood.
