ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Bills wide receiver Greg Dortch will face his former team when Buffalo takes on the Detroit Lions on Thursday night at Highmark Stadium.
It will be just the second time the Rochester native has ever played in Orchard Park.
“Yeah, it was a lot of people, a lot of family that I haven’t even met before,” Dortch said.
A family reunion is expected in the stands because Dortch grew up in Rochester. His father, Greg Dortch Sr., graduated from Brockport High School.
“All he remembers is like just snow and cold and I was playing football in the backyard and I bundled up with no teeth,” said Greg Sr., or “Big Greg.”
When asked if there was any comparison between father and son, “Big Greg” was quick to answer.
“No comparison. Oh he’s gifted. You can see it,” he said. “Me? I was just like your JAG. They call it just a guy.”
If dad was just a guy, his son was the guy.
“I think I have a picture when I was like over two years old, I was in a Green Bay Packers like jumpsuit with a football in my hand. Big afro,” Dortch said. “So like from day one, bro, like football has been like my true love.”
That love has taken Greg Dortch to many places. He played at Wake Forest before stops with the Jets, Panthers, Rams, Falcons, Cardinals, Lions and now the Bills.
“It’s this career starting was ugly. Like he got cut like six times and so forth,” Big Greg said.
At all those stops, Big Greg has been there too.
“My dad’s always been in my backyard. He’s my right hand man,” Greg Dortch said. “He’s always there. Anytime I need somebody to talk to, he’s takes away.”
“I might have been a helicopter. Well, you know, it’s all good though,” Big Greg said. “Look at the results.”
Greg Dortch’s story is far from over, but back home in Rochester on his seventh team, the five-foot-seven receiver and his dad wanted to reflect.
“I’ve been doing this since I was six and just having fun with my teammates,” Greg Dortch said.
“And I drive past the city house and just look. Yeah, we put it here and we just go for it,” Big Greg said. “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can, so you can.”
There will be about 50 or so Dortch’s cheering Greg on Thursday night. For News10NBC’s live coverage from the game, click here.
