The play-by-play voice of Monday Night Football reportedly agreed with ESPN on a new contract extension that will keep him into the 2030s. The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand reports Buck has netted a six-year extension worth “around $108 million.” This is great timing for Buck, who will be on the call for ESPN’s first Super Bowl in February 2027 and on its next one when the rotation comes back around in 2031. This is such a mind-blowing development that I need time to let it sink in because I could never have imagined a broadcaster getting a contract north of $100 million.

Buck is at the end of a five-year, $75 million deal he signed in 2022 after leaving FOX Sports. The Hall of Fame broadcaster has had quite a run at ESPN. His presence, alongside long-time partner Troy Aikman, brought new life to what had been a morbid “Monday Night Football” booth. ESPN went through a lot of trial and error trying to build its MNF brand before reeling in Buck and Aikman. So much so that the Peyton and Eli Manning alt-cast was seen as a better television product than the main event. And while the ManningCast still has its place, Buck and Aikman have legitimized that broadcast.

ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro is interested in getting the rights to the World Series in 2029, according to sources briefed on ESPN’s plans but not permitted to speak publicly. If ESPN were to swipe all or part of the World Series, Pitaro has told Buck he would like him to call it, the sources said. No provision in Buck’s new contract guarantees that happens.
With Disney-owned ESPN, Buck has also expanded outside of football, guest-hosting ABC’s “Good Morning America” and leading a sports version of “Jeopardy” on Disney+.
MLB has a lot on its plate with the collective bargaining agreement expiring this offseason. And I’m sure once that’s ironed out, the league will want to line up deals with its broadcast and streaming partners. That said, ESPN swooping in to snag the World Series and make Joe Buck the lead voice again would be an unexpected twist. Given his calls of the Chicago Cubs’ pennant-clinching victory against the Dodgers and the Northsiders’ World Series win in 2016, I wouldn’t be opposed to hearing Buck doing baseball again. But we can cross that bridge when we get to it.
