Chicago Cubs Lineup: Taylor Batting Cleanup ...Middle East

CUBS LINEUP — Good win for the Cubs last night. Win again tonight, and you have a real shot at the sweep tomorrow, as Chris Sale will not start the finale (and the Braves are much weaker against lefties like Shota Imanaga, who will take the mound for the Cubs).

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Tonight, first, Kevin Gausman needs to step up. He’s on the mound for Chicago coming off one of his alternating bad starts. The Braves are a good offense versus right-handed pitching, too, so this won’t be an easy one for him.

Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for the second of three games against the Atlanta Braves at Wrigley Field.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Seiya Suzuki, RF Alex Bregman, 3B Tyrone Taylor, LF Nico Hoerner, SS Michael Busch, 1B Matt Shaw, DH Pedro Ramirez, 2B Miguel Amaya, C

With a lefty on the mound for Atlanta, Craig Counsell has Michael Conforto and Ian Happ on the bench alongside backup catcher Carson Kelly and BJ Murray. That leaves room behind the plate for Miguel Amaya, at second for Pedro Ramirez, and at DH for Matt Shaw.

With Dansby Swanson returning (hopefully) on Friday, and Taylor taking the left field gig against lefties from Ian Happ, this could be the last time we see Shaw and Ramirez in the same lineup for a while. Next year, it could plausibly happen quite a bit.

Speaking of Taylor, Craig Counsell has him all the way up at cleanup tonight, with Nico Hoerner batting fifth and Busch down to sixth — all matchup-based decisions, no doubt.

Pitching Matchup:

Chicago Cubs: Kevin Gausman, RHP

Oh, Kevin Gausman. What are we going to do with you? One start, Gausman is electric and throwing seven shutout innings (or close to it); the next start he’s leaving in the fourth with seven runs on the board (or close to it). The good games have been excellent; the bad ones have been straight-up uncompetitive.

And I fear tonight might be closer to the latter, as the Braves are a better offense when there’s a righty on the mound: 101 wRC+ (t-12th), 130 HRs (11th).

Atlanta Braves: Martin Perez, LHP

In terms of results, Martin Perez is having a pretty fantastic year overall, with a 3.08 ERA across 24 starts, four relief appearances, and 131.2 total IP. With that said, he’s rocking a strikeout rate under 18% and a walk rate north of 10%. And, thus, his 4.02 FIP reveals a very different story.

And while he is coming off a seven-inning shutout of the Rays on September 10, Perez allowed 10 ER in 18.1 IP across four starts before that. He should be beatable.

It certainly doesn’t hurt that the Cubs have the No. 1 offense in MLB versus left-handed pitching this season. Let’s see if they can keep it rolling tonight at Wrigley Field.
