The after-season Arizona Fall League begins play in just under three weeks, and it’s always a great opportunity to see a little more from a handful of Cubs prospects before everything really gets closed down for the offseason.
Usually, the performances in the league are more about getting in work (making up for lost innings/at bats, or making tough 40-man roster calls a little more clear), but sometimes, there are very real and compelling developments. For example, the 2025 AFL season is where Owen Ayers really put his name on the map with a breakout performance.
Today, the official rosters for the Arizona Fall League dropped, and the group of Cubs prospects who’ll be part of the Mesa Solar Sox squad is mighty interesting:

That might actually be my favorite group of Cubs prospects headed to the AFL in a very long time.
Myles Bailey, of course, was the Cubs’ compensatory second round pick this year, who signed for well over slot, but who wasn’t able to debut during the regular season because of an ankle injury suffered earlier in the year at Florida State. So whenever he takes his first at bat in the AFL, it’ll be our first chance to see him in a professional setting. He had top-of-the-class power in the draft, so it’d be fun to see him hit a few moon shots.
Juan Cabada was one of the Cubs’ big IFA signings last year, and although he missed a lot of time this year, he was bumped up to Low-A Myrtle Beach as an 18-year-old. Clearly, the organization has a lot of belief in his future, and that’s underscored by this AFL assignment – let’s just say, 18-year-old prospects with very little pro experience are NOT your typical AFL assignee.
Dominick Reid was the Cubs’ third rounder last year, and he missed a fair bit of time this season with an injury. For him, the AFL assignment is about picking back up some of those lost innings and continuing his development. The Cubs really need to not miss on a pitching prospect when they take him in the third round.
Jhon Cabral is a really interesting selection, as he was picked up by the Cubs this year after the Marlins let him go. He’s 21 and has only barely pitched above Complex Ball, and his walk rates have been absolutely eye-watering. The Cubs must be big believers in the stuff, though, and want a little more time to keep working with him on in-game situations this year.
Anhuar Garcia, 22, was signed by the Cubs a few years ago out of Mexico, so he doesn’t yet have a ton of pro experience. He threw only 43.1 innings this year across his time in the ACL, at Low-A, and at High-A, but the peripherals were really interesting (29.0% K, 5.1% BB). He began starting later in the year, so the Cubs presumably want to build up his innings total a little more.
The story for Yoendris Gonzalez, 23, is almost identical. He also signed via a nontraditional IFA route (Cuba in 2022), also spread his time across ACL/Low-A/High-A this year, also didn’t pitch a ton (44.1 innings), and also had really interesting peripherals (35.4% K, 9.4% BB).
Jake Knapp was the Cubs’ 8th rounder this year, who was assigned to Double-A right out of the gate because he was a bit older (just turned 26) and was quite polished in college. Unfortunately he was injured and managed just 36.2 innings this season, and presumably needs to make up for lost time.
Kade Snell, 24, was a league-average bat at High-A this season after being drafted in the 5th round last year. He can play all over the outfield, has good power, and runs well. There’s a fair bit of belief in his potential as a future big league outfielder, even in reserve, but he got in only 81 games this year due to injury. He needs at bats.
Miguel Useche is a really interesting one to me, and we’ve been discussing him for a little while now. The 25-year-old catcher was signed only just last year as an undrafted player, and has reached Double-A in his first full professional season. He hit .300/.374/.488/131 wRC+ there, and seemingly didn’t get much attention only because there were other positional guys all around him commanding a whole lot more attention. His undrafted status, his relative newness to the org, together combined with his age leave a lot of question about what the projections are there. Not a knock. I mean that sincerely: I truly just don’t yet know how the org feels about his future. I love that he’s getting this extra time in the AFL.
