One of the best male swimmers in Sweden’s history, Erik Persson, announced that he is calling it a career.
Persson, who had reportedly taken a break from competing to coach, told Swedish newspaper Norra Holland that he is indeed done with his swimming career.
The 32-year-old was named Sweden’s Swimmer of the Year six times and holds Swedish records in the 100 (1:00.08) and 200 breast (2:07.66).
Persson competed in the 100 meter breast at the 2016 Rio Games and in the 200 breast at both the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Olympics.
Persson never advanced to a final in an Olympic event.
Persson won a silver medal in the 200 breast at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest and claimed two long course European Championship medals in the 200 breast, winning gold in 2024 at the event in Belgrade and bronze in 2020 when it took place in Budapest.
Person also won a short course silver medal in the 200 breast at the 2019 European Championships in Glasgow.
According to the article in Norra Holland, Persson said all his medals are now stowed away at his father’s home. He grew up in the town of Kungsbacka on Sweden’s southwest coast, which is roughly a five-hour drive from Stockholm.
Persson’s last competitive event came back in December, when he took 1st in the 200 breast and 4th in the 100 breast at the Swedish National Championships.
