1982 Harrison Ford Flop Film Ranked Among ‘Best Movies of All Time’ ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

It’s one of the more unlikely turnarounds in movie history: a film audiences shrugged off on opening weekend that’s now sitting comfortably on lists of the best ever made.

Ridley Scott‘s Blade Runner hit theaters in June 1982, just two weeks after E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial swallowed up the summer box office, and it never really recovered from the timing. Starring Harrison Ford as a world-weary cop hunting synthetic humans in a rain-soaked future Los Angeles, the film cost around $28 million to make and opened to just $6.15 million. According to Variety’s reporting at the time, it finished its entire summer run with roughly $26 million, not even enough to crack that season’s top 10.

Part of the problem was expectations. Marketing leaned hard on Ford’s action-hero image fresh off Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark, but audiences got a slow-burning, philosophical detective story instead. Test screenings reportedly went so poorly that the studio forced Scott to add a voice-over narration and a tacked-on happy ending, both of which the director hated and Ford, by his own account, phoned in while recording.

None of that stuck around for long. Home video and cable reruns through the ’80s let the film find an audience willing to sit with its slower pace, and Scott eventually got to release the version he’d wanted all along. The 1992 Director’s Cut dropped the narration entirely, and his 2007 Final Cut went even further in restoring his original vision. Both re-releases pushed critical opinion firmly in the film’s favor.

That reassessment hasn’t slowed down. Blade Runner placed at No. 54 on Sight & Sound’s 2022 critics’ poll of the greatest films ever made, climbing from No. 69 in 2012 and No. 45 in 2002, a rare case of a film’s reputation actively improving decade over decade. Rolling Stone has separately ranked it the seventh-greatest movie of the 1980s.
