Behind the song’s success, Jay and the Americans weren’t the only ones celebrating the triumph; it also marked an important milestone for Diamond, who wrote the track.
His early songwriting career at the Brill Building in New York, where he worked alongside fellow songwriters who would later become major music icons.
They included Neil Sedaka, Carole King and Burt Bacharach, who were all writing songs for other recording artists at the time.
“It was an amazing time since we all worked at our craft,” Sedaka recalled, as cited by Spokesman, adding, “We worked every day from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. I learned how to write there. I learned that you need to evolve. You can’t write the same song again and again. I embraced that way of writing and so did Neil and Carole and the rest of the songwriters at the Brill Building.”
