The annual El Grito festival returned Saturday, drawing crowds to Grant Park on Saturday for a celebration of Mexican heritage.
The weekend-long festival features live music, food and art in the days leading up to Mexican Independence Day.
“I think the celebration and the music is half of it,” Franea Arceo, a taco vendor with El Taconazo Express, said.“I think food is the other half.”
“El Grito” translates to “shout” in Spanish, and it refers to the cry for independence that first united Mexicans more than 200 years ago.
Last year, El Grito was cancelled due to ICE enforcement operations. Organizers on their website said the event is back this year with stronger security.
“It’s not about whether you’re from Ecuador, Colombia, Peru [or] Mexico. We’re all Latinos,” Mary Buitron said. “Especially during these times, the whole Latino community has to be strong together and united.”
The celebration continues Sunday night with a civic ceremony hosted by the Mexican Consulate, according to the website.
The festival runs from 2 to 10 p.m.
