Multi-time YMCA Nationals finalist Sam Nauman has announced her verbal commitment to swim and study at Colorado State University beginning in the fall of 2027. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
After lots of thought, I am extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Colorado State University!! Thank you to my amazing family, Coach Patty, Coach Rob, Coach Kate, and Coach Woody for helping make this difficult process a little bit better. I’m so grateful for every opportunity that helped me get here! Go Rams!
A rising senior at La Salle Peru High School in Henry, Illinois, Nauman has been a member of her school’s varsity swimming team since her freshman year. She also trains year-round with the Illinois Valley YMCA, where she primarily specializes in backstroke and IM.
Nauman is coming off a breakthrough 2025-26 season that saw her drop nearly five seconds in the 200 IM and 200 back, and over two seconds in the 100 back. She set the majority of her current lifetime bests at the YMCA National Short Course Championships in March, where she placed fifth in both the 200 back (1:59.68) and 200 IM (2:02.98), as well as eighth in the 100 back (55.20).
On the high school scene, Nauman finished fourth in the 100 back (55.34) and 10th in the 200 IM (2:04.01) at the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) State Championships in November, both then-PBs and her first time making finals at the meet.

100 Backstroke: 55.20 200 Backstroke: 1:59.47 200 IM: 2:02.98A Division I Mid-Major program, Colorado State competes in the Mountain West Conference, with the women’s team finishing eighth out of 11 teams at the Mountain West Conference Championships. Nauman’s current personal bests would have qualified her for the ‘B’ final in the 200 back and ‘C’ finals in the 100 back and 200 IM, setting her up to be an immediate contributor, with two full seasons of training still ahead before her first conference meet.
Nauman joins Myah Rayburn (fly/middle-distance free) and Connolly Taylor (back/sprint free) in committing to the Rams’ class of 2031 so far.
