If that felt half as good for the Cubs as it did for me, the Cubs are having themselves a great evening.
After being swept by the Brewers in a particularly painful way, the Cubs really needed a laid back thumping to get the stink off. The Pirates made themselves available for just such a thumping, and I thank them heartily.
Every Cubs starter got at least one hit in the game, including five multi-hit days. The Cubs had six extra-base hits. They had four runs that scored on outs – that is to say, they obviously had LOTS of guys on base early in innings! Huge days for Seiya Suzuki and Alex Bregman, in particular, and they can share the Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game honors for this one.
Shota Imanaga was solid, albeit against a less-than-impressive Pirates lineup. He still gave up his obligatory dinger, but he located better than he has been, and gave the Cubs six relatively chill innings, taking advantage of the big early lead.
Daniel Palencia got a low-leverage inning to do some work, and although it was scoreless, it wasn’t great. The command was still wholly absent (particularly with the slider). He walked a guy. And he otherwise got three very loud outs. I really hope he figures it out soon.
But let’s stay on the positive here. Great day for the Cubs overall, and a great way to start a weekend series that they absolutely must win.
