Braxton Jones will be the starting left tackle when the Chicago Bears visit the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Ben Johnson said as much earlier this week and avoided putting a timeline on how long Jones would be in that spot before a healthy Ozzy Trapilo overtakes him on the depth chart. Still, offensive line coach Dan Roushar offered some optimism on the Trapilo front on Thursday.
“I think we’re getting closer,” Roushar said of Trapilo’s return to reporters at Halas Hall today (via CHGO’s Adam Hoge). “We’ve done post-work with him on bodies. It’s certainly different than actually going out there and putting it all together, but I’ve been really encouraged with what he’s done so far.” Roushar said that Trapilo will begin working in team drills “soon.” Jones might not be the starting left tackle long, if Trapilo continues to trend in this direction, but that might not matter to Jones, who said this week that he’s taking everything “one rep at a time” after focusing on the bigger picture last year when he won the job out of training camp, only to lose it to Theo Benedet early on. Despite the injuries he’s dealt with, Jones will start on opening day for the fifth straight season. “I’m proud of myself for fighting back,” Jones said this week (via ESPN’s Courtney Cronin). That’s a great accomplishment. Not a lot of fifth-rounders get the opportunity to do that, and I think I’m going to continue to try to seize that moment and do the work that nobody’s watching me do, and I think everything will take care of itself.” Chicago Bears offensive lineman Braxton Jones is in the running to start at left tackle in Week 1. Wide receiver Rome Odunze was back at practice on Thursday. While he was listed as a limited participant on the team’s injury report, he looked like he was moving pretty well in individual drills in this video shared by Nicholas Moreano:Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze was back at practice, moving well during the individual period. pic.twitter.com/f6QmGoVa2c

ESPN’s Matt Bowen has a lofty forecast for Rookie safety Dillon Thieneman today when he opined the possibility of Dillon Thieneman winning the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award, becoming the first safety to do so since Chicago’s Mark Carrier did so in 1990. The logic is that Thieneman, with experience at both safety and slot nickel, could be deployed this year as Dennis Allen’s “Chaos Agent.” Allen’s defenses thrive on Chaos, and Thieneman has the profile that fits the bill. If he were to win DROY, or more (Defensive Player of the Year?), we would certainly be talking about a Bears team with a realistic shot at playing in the Super Bowl this year. And if we’re talking about a hypothetical Super Bowl run, we have to talk about who we think the Bears would be playing on Valentine’s Day. We offered up a few scenarios on today’s episode of the podcast. It was a really fun recording, definitely worth your time.THE BN BEARS PODCAST LIVES HERE: Apple | Spotify | YouTube
