Local musician Anne-Claire stopped by Live & Local last week, following the release of her new EP “Do You Dream Of Me Too?”

Anne-Claire Cleaver has been a significant figure in the Triangle’s music scene for a decade, but “Do You Dream” is her first release in a while. It’s been more than five years since her last single, “Jean Jacket” – and more than eight years since her previous album, 2018’s “I Still Look For You.”
“I think ‘relief’ is the first thing that comes to mind,” she says of the feeling on album-release day. “(And) I think some of the best bits are the things that people haven’t heard yet… (so) I guess what I’m feeling too is, like, anticipation. I’m just so excited for people to hear what’s coming next.”

Recorded at Manifold Studios in Pittsboro, the lush sound of “Do You Dream” is a departure from Anne-Claire’s previous work. Gone is the 80s-inflected pop-rock of “Jean Jacket”; in its place is a classic chanteuse at the top of her game. Starting with a dramatic and powerful chord on the opening track (a tribute to the 1955 thriller “Night of the Hunter”) and closing with Anne-Claire’s soaring, bittersweet vocals on the title track, “Do You Dream” is a smoky, orchestral masterpiece from start to finish.
“I haven’t made any music that sounds like this yet,” Anne-Claire says. “This is how Frank Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald used to record music, where the orchestra’s in the room (together with) the singers.”
Cleaver’s voice is the star throughout, but she’s supported by a star-studded cast – including Charles Cleaver, Nathan Golub, Casey Toll, Matt Douglas, TJ Maiani, Chris Stamey, Jeff Crawford, Chris Boerner, and many more.

And “Do You Dream” also showcases Cleaver’s songwriting skills – though, again, the new songs are very different from her previous output.
“My last record was very confessional, about a very personal time in my life,” she says. “It was about the death of my grandmother and all the struggling that I did with that – and this time, I really wanted to take the focus off of me as a person. It’s more fictional, imaginative. There’s more space for personae. There’s more space for me to try on different hats.”
It’s all a big step forward into the unknown for Anne-Claire, who’s spent the last five years building up her career as a voice teacher. And that’s fitting, she says – because ‘big steps forward into the unknown’ are exactly what she encourages in her students.
“So much of the work that I do with folks is really not about technique, or sounding good, or being good or bad at creating art – it’s really about trusting yourself and being courageous,” she says. “I’d taken a break (from recording) because I didn’t feel confident in what I was doing – (but) when you start to say these things, these encouraging things to people over the years, over and over, it just starts to make you wonder, ‘do I believe this for myself too?’…
“I had the support of a coach, Jess Baldwin, who helps artists work through these blocks. (And) that’s what led me to where I am today.”
