The Irish quartet first entered the chart dated April 2, 1983, with “New Year’s Day,” which reached No. 53. The following year, U2 earned its first top 40 Hot 100 hit, the No. 33-peaking Martin Luther King Jr. tribute “Pride (In the Name of Love).” In 1987, U2 reached the summit with “With or Without You,” which spent three weeks at No. 1 (beginning that May 16). In August that year, the band landed its second Hot leader, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” which reigned for two weeks.
